Self Care for Professionals and Families Supporting those with Special Needs

Presentation Intro: Burnout and compassion fatigue are common experiences for people working in caring professions. This presentation will define the signs of burnout and compassion fatigue, as well as provide tangible ways of preventing and coping with signs and symptoms. Attendees will come away with a greater understanding of how to prevent burnout and compassion fatigue, contributing factors to the development of burnout and compassion fatigue, and skills to de-escalate physical and mental health-related signs and symptoms.

Presenter Bio: Dr. Lauren Birks is a social worker and psychotherapist working in private practice with individuals, couples and family, serving people living in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia. She is a trauma-informed systemic therapist assisting individuals, couples, and families to understand their lived experiences by Opening relational space and realizing preferred ways of living with mindful understanding & skills.

Lauren also has a PhD in Public Health and sits on the provincial Cancer Committee for research ethics, and she is the Editor-in-Chief for the peer reviewed journal, Participator, the official publication of the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy. Lauren lives in Calgary with her partner, daughter and their cats.
