Presentation Intro: Navigating special education services can feel overwhelming for parents who have a child with a disability. This presentation will describe some common experiences and challenges that parents face. It will also provide some suggestions for how educators and parents can develop a strong school-home connection. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
1. Describe the process that occurs after a child is diagnosed with a disability.
2. Understand parental rights when seeking special education services for a child.
3. Describe the responsibilities of educators.
4. Apply strategies to support a child’s learning and success at school and home.
Presenter Bio: Meadow Schroeder, PhD, R Psych is an Associate Professor in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary. She has been teaching and mentoring graduate students in educational psychology for over a decade. She has taught school psychology and counselling courses in assessment, intervention, and ethics. Her main research interests include how students with disabilities are supported in the educational setting, diagnostic decision-making, and self-regulated learning.
